MEET DANNY, ONE OF THE ARTISTS BEHIND THE NEW ((305)) ACTIVE
The latest ((305)) ACTIVE collection is legit on fire -- our new crops, leggings and fly AF ball caps will have you straight up droolin' while you get ready to make sweat sexy.
And now, the man behind the magic: Danny Sobor, the creative genius behind some of our fave pieces from the collection, including the ((305)) to My City tank that lets you rep your NYC, DC or Boston roots.
We caught up with this full-time artist to chat about his clothes, his love of the movie Blade Runner, and the wicked cool path he took into art: this smarty-pants backed up his visual arts degree with another major in neuroscience! Damnnn. So before you sashay away to our NYC studios -- or the online shop -- to snatch up this collection before it sells out, meet Danny.
First up: we are *obsessed* with the Feminist tanks you did in this new merch line -- and obviously we still haven't gotten over the limited edition Rosie the Riveter top. How'd you come up with those ideas?
Thanks! It was all Sadie, I just execute her vision. Her idea was to modernize Rosie the Riveter to represent the strength of women through intersectional feminism. I think the message came across, which is terrific.
My goal is to be fresh and modern with the ((305)) stuff. The simpler the better. It’s a fun challenge to boil a design down to its essential parts.
You crushed it -- it's simple and edgy at the same time. Favorite piece you've designed for ((305))?
This one's not out yet -- but it's probably the upcoming Pride Parade limited run tank. I designed it with Deaton, it came out really playful and a little but not too vulgar.
OMG, a Danny/Deaton original! We literally cannot wait. So have you done clothes before?
Yup! I ran a small clothing label when I was 19 and used to design dozens of tanks/shirts for myself and student groups in college. I sold over 250 tanks of a design for Brown University’s Spring Weekend (concert festival), it was crazy to see so many people in one place wearing my merch.
So cool! You're so good at capturing the spirit and edge of the classes -- I assume you're a regular?
I live in Detroit, I never have :( I think it means you need to expand into the Midwest!
Oh damn, get your ass to one of our cities, then! But why Detroit? And where are you from originally?
I'm an artist full-time, and that's one of the upsides to living in Detroit, the cost of living is low and I can maintain a rigorous studio practice. I freelance for friends but my primary income is shows and commissions.
And originally, I'm from the northwest side of Chicago -- born and raised, baby.
Dream design job for ((305))? Or dream job in general?
For ((305)), I’d love to do a mural in the space sometime. I like painting big. As for in general: mural painter and part-time beer label designer.
Ooh yasss, we always want more murals! How'd you get into art, anyway?
I studied neuroscience and visual art in school. I was focused on how we perceive art and how our visual processes complement art-making. It wasn’t until near graduation that I realized I wanted to try the art thing out for real. It hasn’t been easy but I’ve made it two years so far.
Impossible question. So many options. I’ll always love Zio Ziegler. Incredibly versatile and unique.
God yes, he's amazing. Where else do you go for inspiration?
Instagram, bike rides and convos with friends.
Enough about art -- you have to indulge us one juicy question: single or taken?
I recently started seeing someone I’m super into. She’s been in Europe for five weeks, she comes home tomorrow (thank God). Very excited to see her again.
Cuuute! Alright, some quick hits for ya. Pick one: Tank or sweater? Crop tops or short shorts? Baseball cap or beanie?
Tank, short shorts, baseball cap. More skin!
Finish this sentence: If you wanna be my lover, you gotta get _________.
Down on the dance floor!
Y’ALL READY FOR THIS?
There's a whole lotta heat coming from the ((305)) ACTIVE shop. We’ll take one of everything, kthxbye. Check out the new collection here and we'll catch yo fly self in class.
