Letting Loose with Lindsey Carothers

Hailing from Pittsburgh, PA, our yogi girl Lindsey Carothers came to NYC to pursue a BFA in Musical Theatre at Pace University, and book Broadway of course! We caught up with Lindsey to talk about yoga, good vibes and all things zen. 

How did you get into yoga?

I got into yoga during college--it helped with the competitive nature of performing and the hectic energy of NYC. I didn't love it at first, but I knew it was good for me.

How does yoga help you become a better actor/singer?

It's easy to fall into compare and despair, looking at other actor's careers and wishing I was further along or had a more impressive resume. Yoga teaches me how to approach my acting career: if I show up everyday, I can take baby steps and make consistent progress instead of forcing my development. It's about slowing down. Yoga reminds me that my life is happening right now, not when I achieve, achieve, achieve.

What's your favorite pose?

I love Half Moon. It makes me feel strong, expansive, and I can stretch my tight quads if I want, which are my demise. :D

What would you say to someone who is nervous about trying yoga or unsure yoga is right for them?

Yoga is for everyone!!! When people say to me, "Oh, I'm bad at yoga," it's just a misunderstanding of what the practice is. Westernized yoga has become all about pictures of flexible models doing crazy looking yoga postures on beaches with tan skin and cute outfits. I love the cute outfits, but that's not what yoga is "supposed" to look like. Watch this NY Post video of an 85 year old woman. She gently practiced yoga consistently, and she was able to stand up straight. Yoga is not about a destination, it's starting from where you are, and taking a baby step toward a little more strength, peace of mind, flexibility, acceptance of yourself, however that looks in your body. It's never too late to start. Don't be fooled by the pictures you see in the media.

What are your current good vibe-inducing obsessions?

My other good-vibe inducing obsessions include taking cardio at 305 :D, "The Universe Has Your Back" by Gabby Bernstein, meditating twice a day (I learned at ZivaMeditation), I just started the Whole30, letting myself do nothing sometimes, taking baths, spending time with people who inspire and energize me, Lorde's song "Green Light," writing, putting my phone down, being present in every interaction, singing.

Do you have any tips for how to maintain your chill outside of class?

Take deep breaths, figure out what negative stories are on replay in your mind and create affirmations to say to yourself instead, get enough sleep, don't overbook or overcommit, ask yourself, "What would happen if I leaned towards joy in this situation?" even if you're at work, on a crowded subway, whatever. Also candles, hugs, speaking your mind.
