ELLA: THE HIP WHIP
Our new Boston babe Ella is like Alicia Keys meets carnival queen. She’s chill AF but when she moves, she cracks the whip and you know it’s go-big-or-go-home with those hips.
She's tough, she can brave a winter storm, and she will f*ck you up if you get in her way. But she’s also warm, loving, and 100% accepting that everyone is where they’re at and that’s all good. Ella’s life motto? Don’t get dragged by the current, ride the wave. Take Ella’s class if you want to learn how to balance it all; masculine and feminine, chill and passionate, work and play.
We caught up with this badass babe over cosmos and a cheese plate — and you won't believe how she met her boo!
Hey girl, hey, welcome to the fam! Let's kick it off with an easy intro -- what was your childhood like? How'd you get into dance?
I was adopted at 10 weeks old and raised by two white, socially/politically conscious, mothers. And growing up, my heart was in Jam'nastics Inc (a dance and gymnastics organization). That is where I developed my love and skills for dance, and met my besssssst friends.
We are so jazzed about you bringing that gymnastics background to class -- why'd you get into ((305))??
I love that everyone is themselves. I love that people are motivated to good health and self-care!
What do you do when you're not gettin' down on the dance floor?
Still dancing! I teach a Soca Fusion class on Sundays. I also teach hip-hop dance at the Benjamin Banneker Charter School's afterschool program. Aside from that, I am working on my music project, developing my dance skills, and continuing to learn more about my self and the world around me. I love being in nature too!
Such a busy bee! Do you have time for a boyfriend in that crazy schedule?
Yes! I am taken by an amazing, caring, motivated young man.
Awww! How'd you meet?
He used to be a bouncer at a lounge in Boston. The first time I ever went to this lounge, I was thrown off by the vibe of the place so I wanted to ask an employee about the place. I saw him and just started asking him questions about the lounge and next thing I know he was asking for my number. I had to go through the list of "name, age, passions, astrological sign, height, etc" before agreeing. I was also a sucker for his hug, not gonna lie.
So these are some amazing photos -- where are you??
These were the years I was diving into my self love and gaining self confidence that I never truly had throughout my life. Interesting enough, the body suit photo I was in Boston, and the other photo I was in Trinidad, both places dear to my heart. They represent the strength and power that comes in femininity. I love me, all parts of me, and nobody can take that away from me!
Alright, rapid-fire time -- what's your favorite 90s jam?
How can I choose between "back that ass up," any missy elliot or ja rule song, and "still not a player" by big pun
The amount someone would have to pay you to teach ((305)) butt naked?
They would have to pay me a million every year and continue to pay that amount for the years my future kids are alive. Everyone has to be set!
